Nijar and Cabo de Gata Natural Park
With its sea views, and in the foothills of the Sierra Alhamilla, NIJAR is situated in the east of Andalucía. The village has a population of 2.800 inhabitants, most of them local, and there is no mass tourism. There are many unspoilt beaches within Cabo de Gata Natural Park, 25 km away. The area has a distinctive image - Arabic architecture, the landscape and its special light, the desert, local craft shops and a small amount of tourists.
There are many shops offering a wide range of goods, from typical Níjar pottery, hand woven rugs and blankets to wicker and esparto baskets, plus small traditional wooden craftwork and fresh products such as olive oil, honey and wine.
This region, which has the lowest rainfall in Europe offers many opportunities for leisure, sport, excursions, etc.. From the house you can see a landscape of desert plants, such as cactus, agave, esparto and other local specimens. Tere are many beautiful walks or bike rides to experience. Small coves and beaches of CABO DE GATA-NÍJAR NATURAL PARK are perfect for those who like the sea - sun bathing, diving, windsurfing....
If all this isn´t enough, why not visit the hot water spa in the Sierra Alhamilla, the caves at Sorbas or the desert around Tabernas with its Mini Hollywood sets where many westerns were filmed. Or even Almeria, the capital. You can search for granets and fossils in the volcan close to Níjar, and .....Granada is only 2 hours away by car.
